Wiktor Robertowitsch Zoi ( Russian Виктор Робертович Цой , scientific transliteration Viktor Robertovič Coj ; also: Viktor Tsoi; born June 21, 1962 in Leningrad ; † August 15, 1990 in Tukums , Latvian SSR ) was a Soviet rock musician , poet and actor . The front man of the band Kino was a pioneer of Russian rock. His punk music and poetic-regime-critical texts had a large following in the Soviet Union . Kino was one of the most famous and successful rock bands in Russian rock history.

Life

Youth and Beginnings

He was born as the son and only child of Robert Maximowitsch Zoi of Korean origin and Valentina Wassiljewna Zoi of Russia. In 1974 he founded his first music group Palata No. 6 with Maxim Paschkow . In 1979 he started writing rock songs. At the time, rock was officially a dubious trend in the Soviet Union and was mostly confined to Leningrad.

The also Korean-Russian singer Anita Sergejewna Zoi is not the sister of Viktor Zoi.

In 1980 he was expelled from the Serov Art Academy for "poor grades". He started working as a stoker in a tenement house and played songs at parties. During a gig he met Boris Grebenschtschikow from the already established rock group Aquarium , who took him under his wing.

Zoi made his first stage appearance in 1982 at the 1st Leningrad Rock Club Concert . It was a solo performance, supported by Aquarium members. His innovative lyrics and unusual music won over the audience. A little later he founded the group Гарин и Гиперболоиды ( Garin i giperboloidy ) with Alexei Rybin and Oleg Walinski , which was renamed Kino a few months later . A demo tape was recorded in Zoi's apartment , which soon found widespread distribution beyond Leningrad.

Underground tape

In 1982 Kino released their first music album . It was titled 45 . The band took on more political issues. The song Электричка ( Elektritschka ) is about a man who is stuck on a train that takes him in the wrong direction. The song was a metaphor to the Soviet Union and Zoi was banned from playing the song in public appearances. For this reason , the zoi and the cinema became all the more popular among the youth who were critical of the regime . At the 2nd Leningrad Rock Club concert , the group became even more political and played Я объявляю свой дом… (Безъядерная зона) ( Eng . I declare my home ... (to the nuclear-free zone)). The song corresponded to the anti-war feeling of the Soviet youth who did not want to fight in the war in Afghanistan and Kino won the first prize of the concert.

Until 1985, Kino remained in the outsider role. That changed with Mikhail Gorbachev's policy of glasnost and perestroika , which allowed open political discussions in the Soviet media. 1986 Zoi took advantage of the new openness and published the song Хочу перемен ( Eng . I want changes ).

Youth idol

The breakthrough came for cinema in 1987 . The release of their seventh album Группа крови (dt. Blood group ) triggered a veritable cinomania . Blood group was Kino's most political album to date and it presented music that had never before been heard in the USSR. Some songs were addressed directly to Soviet youth, urging them to take control and initiate changes in the state. Other songs discussed social issues that crippled the country. Zoi became the hero of Russian youth, and cinema the most popular rock band.

In the following years, Zoi appeared in various successful films, even traveled to the USA to present his films at festivals. One of the most famous cult films is u. a. Igla ("Nadel", known as "The Needle", 1988), where Zoi's songs also appeared as the soundtrack.

Kino released other albums, the political texts of which increased the group's popularity. Despite the success, Zoi kept his old job as a stoker. He explained that he needed the money to sponsor cinemas whose albums were widely copied and passed around in the Soviet Union and brought little money to the band. There was also a self- deprecating song Я хочу быть кочегаром (“Ja chotschu bytj kotschegarom”), “I want to be a stoker”.

Cinema ’s biggest concert took place in 1990 at the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium in Moscow . 62,000 fans came to celebrate Russia's most successful rock group. On August 14, 1990, Zoi finished his work on vocals for a new cinema album in Latvia . He wanted to go to Leningrad, where the other band members should play the music.

Early death

In the early morning of August 15, 1990, near Tukums on the road to Talsi , he lost control of his car and rammed a bus. Zoi was killed and the car was completely demolished. One of the few items found after the accident was the tape with the vocals for the new album. The album was completed and was released under the name Чёрный альбом Tschorny albom ("Black Album"). The number of copies sold was enormous. More than 65 young people in the Soviet Union committed suicide after Zoi's death because they believed that it would have no meaning without their idol.

Recordings of the live performances of several previously unknown songs were later released. These recordings are u. a. of retro quality and are considered to be the beginnings of the artist Zoi and the band Kino .

His grave in the Bogoslovskoye Cemetery in Saint Petersburg is still decorated with flowers today. Memorial walls were dedicated to him in Moscow and Minsk ( Belarus ). The Viktor Zoi Wall is located in a small park opposite the stadium, which was completed in 2018. To this day, flowers and especially cigarette butts are regularly deposited there.

Zoi had been married to Marianna Zoi since 1985 and had a son, Alexander (* 1985).

The main outer belt asteroid (2740) Tsoj is named after the musician. In addition, a sculpture of him was installed in Saint Petersburg in 2009 , which was transferred to Okulowka in October 2015 .

Quotes

- Victor Zoi : We'll act from now on!

"'Changes!' challenge our hearts. 'Changes!' challenge our eyes. In our laughter, in our tears and in the pulse of our veins: 'Changes! We are waiting for changes! '"

- Victor Zoi : I want changes!

"But if there is a pack of cigarettes in your pocket, then everything is not so bad for today."

- Victor Zoi : Pack of cigarettes

“There behind the window. Fairy tales with no happy ending. A strange fairy tale. "

- Viktor Zoi : (Strange) fairy tale

"Mom - anarchy. Papa - glass of port wine. "

Lyrics

Characteristic of Zoi's lyrics is the telling of a story like in “Behind the Windows” and “Call for Change”. In several songs the artist used typical puns of his kind such as B. "I have the forest - but there is no ax" (from the song: Место для шага вперёд , Eng . "Place to step forward") or "Every sea - a sip of rain" (from the song Песня без слов , German "song without words").

The following is Zoi's text style based on the song "Song without Words":

“Song without words - night without a dream.
Everything in good time - winter and spring.
Every star - space in the sky.
Every sea - a sip of rain.
Every apple - place to fall.
Every thief - possibility to steal.
Every dog - stick and bone.
And, to every wolf - teeth and malice.

White day behind the windows again.
The day calls me to fight.
I feel it closing my eyes -
The whole world is going to war against me.

If there is a flock, there is a shepherd.
If there is a body, there must be a soul.
If there is a step, there must be an imprint.
If there is darkness, there must be a light.
Do you want to change this world?
Can you accept it for what it is?
Get up and get out of line.
Sit down on an electric chair or a throne?

White day behind the windows again.
The day calls me to fight.
I feel it closing my eyes -
The whole world is going to war against me. "
