The Yoshino Kumano National Park ( Japanese 吉野 熊 野 国立 公園 , Yoshino Kumano Kokuritsu Kōen ) is a Japanese national park in the east of the Kii Peninsula . The national park, which was founded in 1936, extends over the area of the Yoshino-yama and Ōmine mountains in the Nara prefecture , as well as the coastal strip and the coastal waters of the Kumano-nada marine region of the Mie and Wakayama prefectures . With the IUCN protection category V, the park area is classified as a Protected Landscape / Protected Marine Area . The park is managed by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment .
Landmarks
In the north of the park area are the Yoshino-yama . This mountain range is particularly known for its pronounced cherry blossom in April, with more than 30,000 cherry trees. The most distinctive peaks of the Ōmine mountains further south are Sanjogatake , Hakkyogatake (1915 m), Shakagatake and Misen . To the east of this is the Ōdaigahara plateau (1695 m), which is one of the wettest places in Japan with 4800 mm per year. The water erosion has created an impressive landscape here. Further downstream of the Kitayama River is the Dorokyo Gorge . The park area also includes the Kumano Hongū-Taisha , Kumano Hayatama-Taisha and Kumano Nachi-Taisha shrines , which are part of the holy places and pilgrimage routes in the Kii Mountains , as well as the Nachi Waterfall , one of the highest waterfalls in Japan. The second half of the park area consists of a long stretch of coast, also around the island of Kii-Ōshima . Here you will find the Sandanbeki cliffs and Onigajo , a rock formation that was initially hollowed out underwater by waves and has now been raised above water by earthquakes.
