The striped ferns ( Asplenium ) are a genus of plants in the family of the striped fern plants (Aspleniaceae). This species-rich genus is found worldwide.
description
The striped fern species are perennial herbaceous plants . They thrive epiphytically , lithophytically or terrestrially. They have a short, upright, sometimes creeping rhizome on which dark, linear-lanceolate, latticed (clathrate) scales sit. The fertile (sporangia-bearing) and sterile fronds are identical: up to fourfold pinnate or forked, less often (as in the deer tongue ) undivided. The veins end freely. The petioles are usually dark at the base, often glabrous and have two vascular bundles , which often unite to form an x-shaped bundle.
The Sori stand individually and away from the edge. Like the veil ( Indusium ), they are mostly linear, from which the name striped fern is derived.
The basic chromosome number is x = 35 or 36.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Asplenium was first published by Carl von Linné . The genus name Asplenium was transferred from the splenic fern ( Asplenium ceterach ) to the genus and is derived from the Greek word splen for spleen and is based on the earlier use of the species in "spleen addiction".
The delimitation of the genus Asplenium within the family Aspleniaceae is controversial. Possibly all other genera of the family belong to the genus Asplenium . Regardless of this, the genus comprises the majority of the family with around 700 species. With the maximum extent of the genus Asplenium L. , synonyms are: Acropteris Link , Amesium Newman nom. Superfl., Antigramma C.Presl , Arcasplenium Moore ms. ex Baker , Asplenidictyum (Hook.) J.Smith , Asplenium nothosubgen. Asplenoceterach (DEMey.) Rosselló, Muss, Salvo & N.Torres , Asplenium subgen. Ceterach (Willd.) Vida ex Bir, Fraser-Jenk. & Lovis , Asplenium subgen. Phyllitis (Hill) Jermy & Viane , Asplenium subgen. Phyllitopsis (Reichst.) Jermy & Viane , Biropteris Kümmerle , Boniniella Hayata , (sometimes considered an accepted genus) Caenopteris Berg , Ceterach Adanson , Ceterach Garsault , Ceterach Lam. & DC. , Ceterach Willd. nom. cons., (sometimes considered an accepted genre). Ceterachopsis (J.Smith) Ching , Ceterachopsis J.Smith , Chamaefilix Hill , Cheilosorum J.Smith , Dareastrum Fée , Darea Jussieu , Diplora Baker , Eremopodium Trevisan , Glossopteris Rafinesque nom. superfl., Glossopteris Rafinesque , Hemionites J.Smith , Hemionitidastrum Fée , Homatoneuron Klotzsch , Hymenasplenium Hayata , Lobium Keyserling , Loxoscaphe (Blume) Presl , Loxoscaphe Moore , Macrophyllidium Rosenst. , Micrasplenium Keyserling , Micropodium Mettenius non Saporta , Neottopteridastrum Fée , Nephrodium J.Sm. , Notolepeum Newman , Onopteris Necker , Parasplenium Keyserling , Phyllitis Hill , Phyllitis J.Smith , Phyllitis Ludwig , Phyllitis Moench , Scolopendrium Adanson , Sinephropteris Mickel , Stormesia Kickx f. , Tarachia Presl , Thamnopteris (Presl) Presl nom. superflat., Trichomanes Bubani , Triphlebia Baker .
There are also numerous inter- and intraspecific hybrids , which, like all fern hybrids, can be recognized by the often clumped spores or undeveloped sporangia.
The more than 700 species are distributed almost worldwide. There are around 17 species in Central Europe. If the genus Hymenasplenium (more than 30 species, 8 of them in China) is separated as an independent one, then 90 species occur in China, 17 of them only there. There are around 30 species in Australia.
