You've Got a Friend in Me is a song by Randy Newman from 1995. Newman wrote the song as the theme song for the Disney film Toy Story . The song became an integral part of the franchise and is also included in the two sequels Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3 in other versions. The original version was in the Oscar Awards 1996 as Best Song nomination.

Randy Newman wrote the song as the theme song for the 1995 film Toy Story. The song is used in the film to illustrate the special relationship between Andy and the main character Sheriff Woody Pride and appears in the opening credits of the film. In addition, the song was used instrumentally as a leitmotif in all three films and in the rest of the franchise. The first part also used a duet version with Lyle Lovett .
In the second Toy Story film in 1999, the song was sung by the character Wheezy. This version was not sung by Joe Ranft , who voiced the character in the film, but by Robert Goulet .
The third film, which came out in 2012, used a Spanish version called You've Got a Friend in Me (Para el Buzz Español) , recorded by the Gipsy Kings .
Awards
The original version of the song was nominated for "Best Song" at the 1996 Academy Awards, but lost to Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas , also a Disney film, written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz . The same thing happened at the 1996 Golden Globe Awards .
Cover versions
In the German version, Klaus Lage sings a German cover version called Du hast'n Freund in mir , which was later also implemented in a longer version on his 2007 album Zug um Zug and in 1999 on the live album Live for two with Bo Heart .
Michael Bublé covered the song on his 2013 album To Be Loved .
In 2015, Penny ( Kaley Cuoco ) performed the song as a marriage vow in the first episode of season 9 of The Big Bang Theory .
A father-daughter duo went viral in 2017. The four-year-old American Claire Ryann Crosby sang the song with her dad Dave. The video reached three million views in just a few days (around 19 million as of January 2018).
