Young-Holt Unlimited was an American instrumental - soul-jazz duo of the late 1960s.

Band history

Until 1966 the jazz bassist Eldee Young and the drummer Redd Holt formed the "Ramsey Lewis Trio" together with the jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis . Then they separated from Lewis and continued together with pianist Don Walker as the “Young Holt Trio”. With the title Wack Wack from their debut album of the same name , they had a top 40 hit in the US charts in 1967 . The formation was later called "The Young Holt" and from 1968, after Walker was replaced by Ken Chaney , "Young-Holt Unlimited".

The instrumental title Soulful Strut is the most famous song of the duo. It reached number 3 on the US singles charts in 1968 and was a million-seller ( gold status ). The corresponding album also made it into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200. The instrumental piece is also the basis for Am I the Same Girl by Barbara Acklin , the piano replacing the vocals. It was written by Eugene Record and William Sanders. Acklin did not publish her song until a year later and thus had a smaller hit in the US (79th place), Dusty Springfield made it into the UK charts with a cover version (43rd place) in the same year. Swing Out Sister came with the song in 1992 internationally again in the charts, including in Germany at number 53. In 1998, the instrumental by Young-Holt Unlimited was used in the film Ein Zwilling seldom comes alone .

Young-Holt Unlimited broke up in 1974 after waning success. In 1983, Holt and Young reunited with Ramsey Lewis.
