history

Foundation and beginnings

In 1994 the singer David Henzie-Skogen went to the local high school in Madison , Wisconsin in search of like-minded people to form a brass band. It was there that he came across Nat McIntosh, who was the sousaphonist for Mama Digdowns Brass Band at the time . Together with Josh Smith ( trumpet ), Ben McIntosh ( trombone ), Jason Smith ( drums ), Mark Chilson (trombone), Garrick Witte (trumpet), Vinnie Okada (alto saxophone ), Matt Picket (trombone), Brian Berkin (saxophone ), Chuck Wagner (trumpet), Joe Goltz, Matt Miller (both trombone), Mike Bonan (trumpet), Matt Rappaport ( percussions ), Carl Bartsch (tenor saxophone) and Jason Flaks (drums) they form a brass band that initially performed under the name One Lard Biskit Brass Band . With this line-up they also played their first album in the style of a classic New Orleans Brass Band, which was released in 1997 under the title "Better Recognize".

The One Lard Biskit Brass Band disbanded as early as 1997 , after which some of the musicians founded the Youngblood Brass Band in the same year .

Musical mix

While the band played exclusively traditional brass music in the first few years, their music was increasingly influenced by hip-hop, jazz and funk and David Henzie-Skogen's vocals alternated with rap passages. The band tore down musical boundaries and combined very different styles into a mix. The bass line of Nat McIntosh's sousaphone in particular makes the music unmistakable. The group works with rapper Talib Kweli , Mike Ladd and Ike Willis , among others .

Replacement

2015.

In mid-2009, the departure of the sousaphonist Kenny Bentley, who had supported the band musically since 2004, was announced. Nat McIntosh also left the group temporarily, but has been back in the band since their 2010 European tour. The line-up of the Youngblood Brass Band has since looked like this:

  • Dave Henzie-Skogen (percussion, vocals)
  • Tom Reschke (percussion)
  • Jonah Gaster (percussion)
  • Nat McIntosh (Sousaphone)
  • Charley Wagner (trumpet)
  • Mike Boman (trumpet)
  • Joshua Smith (saxophone)
  • Joseph Goltz (trombone)
  • Matt Hanzelka (trombone)

Collaboration with Bligg

In 2011 the Swiss rapper Bligg re-recorded his album "Bart Aber Herzlich", originally published in 2010, together with the Youngblood Brass Band in their recording studio in the USA. The product of this collaboration was published in 2011 under the title "Brass aber cordially" and promoted by the participating musicians on a joint tour. The Youngblood Brass Band also appeared in 2012 together with Bligg as a show act in the finale of the television show “ The Greatest Swiss Talent ”.
