Yu Chia-hsuan gained his first international experience at the Junior Asian Championships 2012 in Colombo , where he finished seventh in 52.74 s. Two years later he won the Junior Asian Championships in Taipei in 50.49 s and was fourth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3: 10.71 min. He then took part in the Asian Games in Incheon for the first time, reached seventh place in 51.84 s and retired from the season in the run-up. In 2015 he took part in the Asian Championships in Wuhan , but did not reach the final there with 52.20 seconds. Two years later he was fifth at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar in 50.90 s and then reached the semifinals at the Summer Universiade in Taipei, in which he was eliminated with 52.43 s. In 2018 he again took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta and did not make it to the finals in both the individual competition and the relay. In 2019 he finished seventh in 51.31 s at the Asian Championships in Doha . He then reached the semi-finals at the Student World Games in Naples and was eliminated there with 50.35 s.
In 2018, Yu became the Taiwanese champion in the 400-meter hurdles.
