Yucca lacandonica (common names : Quim Yucca, Tropical Yucca) is a species of the genus Yucca in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca lacandonica grows epiphytically or terrestrially with a 2 to 4 m long, thin, curved trunk. The trunk diameter at the base is up to 20 cm. The variable, soft, serrated, green leaves with yellow edges are 30 to 80 cm long and 1 to 3 cm wide.

The branched, short inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 0.4 to 0.6 m high. The pendulous, bell-shaped, white flowers are 3 to 4 cm long and about 1 cm in diameter. The flowering period extends from May to June.

distribution

Yucca lacandonica is widespread in the tropical zones, in dense evergreen forests in Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula at altitudes between 800 and 1000 meters.

Systematics

This species is hardly known. Yucca lacandonica is a representative of the Yucca series Yucca , but geographically isolated. Yucca lacandonica is closely related to Yucca elephantipes .

The first description by Arturo Gómez Pompa and Javier Valdés under the name Yucca lacondonica was published in 1962.
