The Japanese Yumiko Takahashi ( Japanese 高橋由美子 Takahashi Yumiko ), born Yumiko Matsuba ( 松葉由美子 Matsuba Yumiko ), is the founder and director of the Matsuba Fund , the micro-credit grants. The organization is based in Colmera , in the East Timorese capital, Dili .

Career and work of the Matsuba Fund

Yumiko Takahashi received a bachelor's degree from Tōkyō Joshi Daigaku in 1972 . In 2003 she founded the Matsuba Fund . The non-profit organization for microloans aims to fight poverty in East Timor. In the event of repayment problems for family reasons, the money will not be forcibly withdrawn.

The first loans were granted in Lospalos back in 2003 . Registration with the forum of non-governmental organizations in East Timor FONGITIL took place in 2004 and recognition of the charitable status with the East Timorese tax office in 2005. In 2006, the Matsuba Fund granted interest-free loans to widows of those who died in the violent unrest that year . From 2011 to 2012, the Matsuba Fund had to suspend work because of the Tōhoku earthquake . In 2014 the Japanese branch of the Matsuba Fund was founded to raise funds for East Timor in Japan.

We also support several orphanages of the Salesians in East Timor: In Dili, Lospalos, Baucau , Ainaro and three others.

In 2015 the Matsuba Fund has 16 employees. The loan amount for that year was $ 109,461.60 (of which $ 10,000 to the Salesians and $ 2,500 to the 2006 widows). Takahashi started with $ 25,000 from the inheritance of her father, Takuro Matsuba. There were also private donations. The interest rate is ten percent. Three percent go to the manager as commission, seven percent cover the costs of the fund. Only a few hundred dollars can be saved annually. It is the lowest interest rate in East Timor. Loans to veterans of the struggle for independence from the government are charged at 18 percent, microloans from the Grameen Bank require 24 percent.

Awards

On May 6, 2015, Takahashi was awarded the Medal des Ordem de Timor-Leste by President Taur Matan Ruak in recognition of her work in East Timor.
