Yun Bo-seon (born August 26, 1897 in Asan , Chungcheongnam-do Province , former Korea , now South Korea , † July 18, 1990 in Seoul , South Korea) was President of South Korea from 1960 to 1962 . He was the nephew of Yun Chi-ho and Yun Chi-young .

Life

Yun studied at the University of Edinburgh , which he graduated in 1930 as a Master of Arts. After independence from Japan in 1945, he entered politics, Syngman Rhee was his mentor. In 1948 Rhee appointed him mayor of Seoul. A year later he became Minister of Trade and Industry, but he increasingly came into opposition to the increasingly autocratic ruling Rhee. Yun eventually became president of the Korean Red Cross until he was elected to parliament in 1954. The following year he was a co-founder of the opposition Democratic Party .

After Rhee was overthrown by a pro-democracy student revolt, Yun was elected president on August 13, 1960. The effectiveness of his government suffered from internal rivalries within the Democratic Party. In 1961, Major General Park Chung-hee staged a coup , and Yun finally resigned on March 22, 1962. He opposed Park's authoritarian rule, but failed to prevail in the 1963 and 1967 presidential elections. After several suspended sentences for anti-government activities, the now 83-year-old Yun withdrew from politics in 1980 and devoted himself more to cultural activities.

In 1990 Yun died of complications from diabetes and high blood pressure.
