Veresegyház [ ˈvɛrɛʃɛchaːz ] is a Hungarian city in Gödöllő County in Pest County . It has about 16,500 inhabitants (as of 2011) and is located 30 kilometers northeast of Budapest and 10 kilometers northwest of the former royal residence Gödöllő .

history

Various finds seem to prove the continuous settlement of the place as early as prehistoric times. A church is said to have been built in Árpád's time . The name - something like "Red Church" - is traced back to the Mongol invasions in 1241. According to legend, the blood of those who were killed in the church stained the walls red.

The place has also been mentioned in a document since 1375. The church from that time was later replaced by the late baroque church that is still there today. In the course of history, Veresegyház has been devastated several times, but has always become an important reference point for the area, especially through the markets.

Veresegyház has been a place for excursions and relaxation since around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. From 1929 the place was advertised as such in Budapest . As a rural municipality, Veresegyház was granted city rights in 1999 after the relevant infrastructure requirements were met. It is considered an up-and-coming place, as numerous very wealthy citizens of Budapest have moved to the newly built suburbs (villa parks).

economy

The focus of economic activity is on services (diverse shopping opportunities ), supplemented by relatively important industrial settlements (e.g. Mey , GE ) and employment opportunities in the neighboring city. New efforts are being made to tourism, whereby the previously little used lake landscape with a small beach and fishing opportunities should be used. In addition, the thermal bath, the water of which is compared with that of the Széchenyi bath in Budapest, is to be modernized. Transport connections to the capital Budapest are good, with trains to Budapest West Railway Station every hour .
