Yungasocereus inquisivensis is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Yungasocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Both the botanical name of the genus and the epithet of the species refer to the place where it was found, the Bolivian provinces of Yungas and Inquisivi .

description

The tree-shaped or shrubby, branched Yungasocereus inquisivensis reaches heights of 4 to 5 meters. Its dark green shoots are 6 to 7 centimeters in diameter. The ribs, usually 6 to 10, are straight, very blunt, up to 1 cm high and 1.5 cm wide. The 4 to 12 needle-like, brownish to gray thorns are 1.5 to 3 centimeters long.

The white, narrow, bell-shaped flowers are slightly zygomorphic and appear - often 5 to 8 at a time - near the tip of the shoot. They open day and night and are 5 to 6 inches long.

The fruits are between 2 and 2.8 centimeters in length. They contain small, broad oval, shiny black, slightly keeled on the back seeds 0.9 millimeters long and 0.7 millimeters wide.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Yungasocereus inquisivensis is distributed in the Bolivian provinces of Yungas and Inquisivi in the department of La Paz at altitudes of 1000 to 2300 meters. The genus was first described in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter . The only species of the genus was described in 1957 by Martín Cárdenas as Samaipaticereus inquisivensis .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
