Yusuf Ziya Kavakçı

Hafiz Yusuf Ziya Kavakçı (born June 22, 1938 in Hendek , Sakarya , Turkey ) is a Turkish Islamic clergyman.

Life

At a young age he was trained in Islamic sciences and, after passing his exams, worked as a preacher , muezzin and mufti in Istanbul. Kavakçı graduated from the Faculty of Law of Istanbul University and from İstanbul Yüksek İslam Enstitüsü and received his doctorate in 1967. The habilitation followed in 1980.

He was dean of the theological faculty at Ataturk University in Erzurum . Kavakçı left Turkey because his daughter wearing a headscarf was not allowed to study there. Today he works in the United States of America. He is the Resident Scholar and Imam of the Islamic Association of North Texas. He is the founder and instructor of the IANT Qur'anic Academy private school in Richardson, Texas and founding dean of Suffa Islamic Seminary in Dallas .

He was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter a common word between us and you ( Engl. A Common Word Between Us and You ), the personalities of Islam to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere" (Engl. "Leaders of Christian Churches, everywhere ... ") (October 13, 2007).

He is the father of former MP Merve Kavakçı .
