Yuzuru Sera

Yuzuru Sera ( Japanese 世 良 譲 , Sera Yuzuru , actually: Tessō Sera ( 世 良 哲 壮 , Sera Tessō ); born March 10, 1932 in Unnan , Shimane Prefecture ; † February 17, 2004 ) was a Japanese jazz pianist .

Sera comes from a family of doctors and has had piano lessons since his first year of elementary school. During his law studies at Meiji University , he played in the band of Makio Sakuma in US military bases in 1950 and was also part of Munehiro Okuda's Blue Sky Orchestra.

Yuzuru Sera played in the Japanese jazz scene from the 1950s a. a. with Hidehiko Matsumoto , Hideo Shiraki ( Plays Bossa Nova , 1962), George Kawaguchi and Akira Miyazawa . In 1965 he took part in the Berlin Jazz Days with Terumasa Hino . In 1967 he released the LP Best Sellers under his own name as Joe Sera and His Group , which he recorded with Hachiro Aoyama , Kiyoshi Sugimoto (guitar), Masanaga Harada (bass), George Otsuka and Jimmy Takeuchi (drums).

From the 1970s Sera continued to work with his own formations, such as His Young Friends and his trio; He also played with the Japan All Stars (from Hidehiko Matsumoto , Eiji Kitamura , Shungo Sawada , Masanobu Asakura , Jimmy Takeuchi ) and in a duo with Eiji Kitamura ( Age of Swing , 1978). The discographer Tom Lord lists Sera in the field of jazz between 1958 and 1997 with 37 recording sessions, most recently with Martha Miyake .

In 2003 he received the Nanri Fumio Prize.
