George Ōtsuka

George Ōtsuka or George Ohtsuka ( Japanese ジ ョ ー ジ 大 塚 , Jōji Ōtsuka ; born April 6, 1937 in Tokyo Prefecture ), actually Keiji Ōtsuka ( 大 塚 敬 治 , Ōtsuka Keiji ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( drums ) and band leader .

Live and act

Otsuka, the drums on the self-taught and the instrument discovered while working as Bandboy for itself, belonged to the late 1950s to Cozy Quartet of Sadao Watanabe . From 1961 to 1965 he was a member of the quartet of Hidehiko Matsumoto (with which the first recordings were made in 1965) and with whom he became known. He also worked in the Tokyo jazz scene a. a. with Masao Yagi , Akira Miyazawa , Yusuru Sera and Hampton Hawes .

In 1965 he founded his own trio with Hideo Ichikawa (piano) and Masaoki Terakawa (bass); with this line-up he recorded his debut album Page 1 in 1967 , followed by Page 2 (1968) and Page 3 (1969). Around 1970 he performed with his jazz trio at the Tokyo jazz club Pit Inn. For Victor, Otsuka recorded Groovin 'With My Soul Brother with Roy Haynes in 1968 (with Hideo Ichikawa and Yoshio Ikeda ). He toured Japan in 1970 as Four Drums with Haynes, Jack DeJohnette and Mel Lewis .

In the 1970s he played a. a. with Takeru Muraoka , Terumasa Hino , Kiyoshi Sugimoto , Takao Uematsu , Isao Suzuki ; in addition, LPs were created under his own name with Sea Breeze (1971), Go On (1972), In Concert! (1973), et al. a. with Shunzo Ohno , as well as You Are My Sunshine (1974), Loving You George (1975) and 1976 Physical Structure . In 1975 he and his trio appeared with Phil Woods , furthermore he played with Mabumi Yamaguchi , Takashi Mizuhashi , Fumio Karashima and Hidehiko Matsumoto ; also in the Trio We Three , which he formed with Hiroyuki Takamoto and Hideaki Kanazawa. During a stay in New York, he recorded the album Maracaibo Cornpone with guest musicians such as Steve Grossman , Richie Beirach , Masabumi Kikuchi , John Abercrombie , Yoshiaki Masuo , Miroslav Vitous and Nana Vasconcelos ; with Mabumi Yamaguchi, Kenny Kirkland , John Scofield and Miroslav Vitous followed in 1978 in Tokyo the production Guardian Angels . With Hiroshi Kamayatsu he recorded albums in the fusion band Thunderbirds .

In the field of jazz, he was involved in 37 recording sessions between 1965 and 1990, most recently with the pianist Sakurako Ogyu ( Deep in Autumn ).
