Yves Charuest

Yves Charuest (* around 1960) is a Canadian jazz and improvisation musician ( alto saxophone ).

Yves Charuest, who comes from Montréal , began his musician career in the 1980s when he was a member of the jazz scene in his hometown. a. worked with Jean Beaudet , Pierre Cartier , Jean Derome , Lisle Ellis , Daniel Lessard and Michel Ratté . Since then he has played a. a. in the ensembles I Like Jazz (1984–86), in the Duo Charuest-Ratté (1984–86), Evidence (1984–86), Trio Michel Ratté (1988–93) and Wreck's Progress (1992–96), with whom he performed at jazz festivals in Canada. He also collaborated with the electro-acousticians and composers Jean-François Denis , Jef Chippewa and Jean Piché. From 1985 to 1990 Charuest was a member of the Peter Kowald Trio (with Louis Moholo ), with whom he also appeared in the USA and Europe. 1986–88 he lived in France, Germany and the Netherlands; During this time he also played with Matthias Schubert . In the field of jazz he was involved in seven recording sessions between 1989 and 1998, including a. with André Duchesne ( L'Ou 'L , 1991) and Darren Copeland ( Rendu Visible ; 1998).

After a phase outside the music scene, Charuest worked in various improvisation projects from 2011 such as the Murray Street Band , the Ratchet Orchestra and with Nicolas Caloia , with whom he works in duo, trio ( Still , with Peter Valsamis ) and quartet ensembles, in Stir ( with Caloia, Valsamis and Agustí Fernández as well as in a quartet with Lori Freedman and Josh Zubot ), also in cooperation with William Parker , Marshall Allen , Nate Wooley and Mike Vlatkovich and in the Montreal improvisation scene with Scott Thomson , Ellwood Epps , Philippe Lauzier , Sam Shalabi and John Heward . He also worked with the dancer and choreographer Susanna Hood ( The Muted Note ) and with Alanna Kraaijeveld ( Certain Crafts ). In 2015 Charuest received the François-Marcaurelle Prize at the Off Festival de jazz in Montréal.
