Sabile on the Abava

Sabile (German: Zabeln ) is a small town with almost 1700 inhabitants in western Latvia in the historic Kurland region on the Abava River . In 2016 it had 1,642 inhabitants.

history

The area and the castle hill were populated by cures . Sabile was first mentioned in a document in 1253. From the 14th century to the 16th century it was part of a castle of the Livonian Order . After 1561, as part of the Duchy of Courland , the place became a local center for trade and crafts.

The oldest bell in Latvia is located in the Lutheran church, which was built in 1567. It bears 1450 stamped as the date of origin. The church also houses the oldest pulpit in Latvia from 1592.

From 1795 the Duchy of Courland was part of the Russian Empire as the Governorate of Courland .

By 1890, 73% of the population was Jewish. After the Shoah in World War II , there was no longer a Jewish community in Sabile. The synagogue , built in 1890, is now used as a conference hall.

Sabile was elevated to the status of town under German occupation during the First World War .

Others

Sabile, located in the middle of Courland Switzerland , has a specialty with what, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is the northernmost vineyard in the world. Wine has been cultivated on this mountain since the days of the Order. During the Soviet era, however, the vineyard was not cultivated, but viticulture was resumed in 1989. The vineyard has a height of 33.7 m (115 m above sea level ) and a total cultivation area of 1.5 ha . Every year in July there is a wine festival. The vineyard's low yields are mainly intended for local consumption.
About 11 km south of Sabile, in Matkule (German: Mattkuln ) there is a small winter sports area with two lifts, floodlights and a café.

The German-Baltic geographer Arved von Schultz (1883–1967) came from the Rinkuln estate near Sabile .
Otto Freiherr von Fircks (1912–1989), SS-Obersturmführer and CDU politician, came from the elections at Sabile.
