history

The earliest records of Żabno come from the twelfth century by Bolesław V. It is not entirely clear when Żabno received town charter. The first written record dates from 1385. In 1487 the town received market rights. The city was destroyed several times by fires and acts of war. In 1873 a cholera epidemic broke out. The brickworks, which opened in 1905, was the city's first industrial enterprise; previously handicrafts and trade dominated the city's economy.

From 1975 to 1998 the municipality belonged to the Tarnów Voivodeship .
