description

Vegetative characteristics

The trunks grow underground and are ellipsoidal with a length of 25 to 40 centimeters and a diameter of 7.5 to 15 centimeters. The cataphylls are hairy, triangular, provided with stipules and 3 to 5 centimeters long. The usually two or three leaves are simply pinnate, 120 to 180 centimeters long and 45 to 50 centimeters wide. The petiole is 50 to 60 centimeters long, reinforced with scattered spines. Stipules sit on the leaf base. The rachis is also scattered with thorns on the underside. The paper leaflets are in 20 to 30 pairs, are lanceolate, with a distinct midrib. The middle leaflets are 15 to 25 centimeters long and 3 to 5 centimeters wide, the leaf margin is flat with clear teeth.

Generative characteristics

Zamia restrepoi is dioeciously segregated ( diocesan ).

The male cones are three or four, are long, conical, 5 to 10 inches long, 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and hairy reddish brown. Your stem is 15 to 21 inches long and slightly hairy. The hexagonal sporophylls have a smooth surface.

The female cones stand individually and are cylindrical at a height of 14 to 15 centimeters and a diameter of about 5 centimeters; they are hairy reddish brown on the outside. Their stem is 25 to 30 cm long, 1.5 cm in diameter and glabrous. The sporophylls are hexagonal, with a bump in each corner on the sporophyll surface.

The sarcotesta of the seeds is red when ripe. The sclereotesta is ovate and smooth.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence and endangerment

Zamia restrepoi comes to Colombia along the Río Sinu in the department of Cordoba . It grows in the tropical rainforest and savannah at altitudes of 75 to 150 meters. Neither much is known about the location requirements nor the exact distribution area. This species is extremely endangered in its area due to dam projects.

Taxonomy

The first description under the name ( Basionym ) Chigua restrepoi was made by Dennis William Stevenson . The specific epithet restrepoi honors Father Sergio Restrepo Jaramillo (1939–1989), a Colombian botanist who rediscovered this species. The accepted name since Lindstrom 2009 is Zamia restrepoi (DWStev.) A.Lindstr. Another synonym for Zamia restrepoi (DWStev.) A.Lindstr. is Chigua bernalii D.W.Stev.
