Zanobatus schoenleinii

Systematics
Subclass : Plate gill (Elasmobranchii)
without rank: Stingray (batoidea)
Order : Stingray (Myliobatiformes)
Family : Zanobatidae
Genre : Zanobatus
Type : Zanobatus schoenleinii
Scientific name
Zanobatus schoenleinii
( Müller & Henle , 1841)

Zanobatus schoenleinii is aray foundin the eastern Atlantic, more precisely on the west African coast between Morocco and Angola . He prefers to stay on sand and muddy bottoms at depths of 10 to 60 meters, mostly above 25 meters.

features

Zanobatus schoenleinii is a maximum of one meter long. Specimens caught on the coast of northwestern Africa in 2006 ranged in length from 28 to 57 centimeters. The body disc is almost circular, only slightly pointed at the front end. The tail, which is provided with two dorsal fins and one caudal fin, is slightly shorter than the length of the body disc. Zanobatus schoenleinii is brown-gray in color and has a pattern of wide blackish stripes that extend from right to left over the body disc. There are also blackish spots on the edges.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of Zanobatus schoenleinii . It feeds mainly on crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates and reproduces ovoviviparously .

Systematics

The species was first scientifically described in 1841 by the German naturalists Johannes Müller and Jakob Henle under the name Platyrhina schoenleinii . In 1913, the American ichthyologist Samuel Garman introduced the genus Zanobatus for the species , which has remained monotypical for over 100 years . Zanobatus is the only genus of the Zanobatidae family that was established in 1928 by the American zoologist Henry Weed Fowler . The systematic position of the Zanobatidae is still not finally clarified. Today they are mostly assigned to the stingray-like (Myliobatiformes) and are there as a basal branch of the order. In the phylogenetic analysis of the cartilage fish systematics by Gavin JP Naylor and co-workers, on the other hand, the Zanobatidae form a branch in the order of the fiddle and saw rays ( Rhinopristiformes ) and at Fishbase they form the subfamily Platyrhininae within the family Rhinobatidae together with the genus Platyrhinoidis .

A second Zanobatus species was described in 2016 . Zanobatus maculatus occurs on the coast of West Africa, is smaller and more thorny.
