The place is known as the 'most beautiful village' in Morocco and takes its name from a local brotherhood ( zaouia ) for the saintly Sidi Mohammed Ou-Boubker .

location

The place Zaouia d'Ifrane is about 9 km (driving distance) north of the provincial capital Ifrane in the wooded mountains of the Middle Atlas ; the cities of Azrou and Fès are about 29 km southwest and 70 km north, respectively. The Oued Ifrane , a tributary of the Oued Aïn Leuh , flows past the village and flows into the Oued Beht , a tributary of the Sebou .

population

The approximately 2,000 inhabitants of the place are mainly of Berber descent, but many wealthy families from Fès and Meknes also have a domicile here.

economy

The idyllically situated place with its numerous small hotels and restaurants lives to a large extent from Moroccan tourists who like to retreat here, especially in the hot summer months. Otherwise, farmers, craftsmen and small traders determine the economic life of the place.

history

There is no written information about the Berber regions of Morocco; one can assume, however, that the region originally functioned as a summer pasture area for the sheep and goat herds of the cattle breeders from the lower and therefore drier areas. The process of settling down probably only began in the 16th or 17th century.

Attractions

  • In the village there are still some of the formerly typical single-storey houses with a foundation of field stones and walls made of rammed earth mixed with small stones.
  • After prolonged or heavy rainfall, one or more waterfalls ( cascades ) fall from a rocky plateau above the village in front of an approx. 100 m high rock face.
