Jonathan Shapiro
Jonathan Brian Shapiro (born October 27, 1958 in Cape Town ), known as Zapiro , is a South African cartoonist .
Life
Shapiro was born to Gershon and Gaby Shapiro. After matric at Rondebosch Boys' High School studied architecture at the University of Cape Town , but moved to the Michaelis School of Fine Arts at the same university, where he studied art. He then had to do his military service with the South African Defense Force , where he refused to serve with the weapon.
From 1983 he was involved in the newly formed United Democratic Front and was arrested under the Illegal Gatherings Act . He was a member of the End Conscription Campaign , whose logo he designed. In 1987 he first published cartoons in the educational magazine South . He received a Fulbright Scholarship, was briefly arrested in 1988 and then studied caricature drawing at the School of Visual Arts in New York until 1991 .
From 1994 to 2016 he published in the Weekly Mail / Mail & Guardian newspaper , from 1994 to 2005 in Sowetan , 1996 to 1997 in Cape Argus , since 1998 in the Sunday Times , 2009 to 2016 in The Times and since 2017 in the Daily Maverick . His caricatures also appear in other publications.
From 2003 to 2006 Shapiro took part in the World Economic Summit in Davos . Ever since then Deputy President Jacob Zuma claimed in a lawsuit in 2005 that one could eliminate HIV by showering, Shapiro Zuma - who became president in 2009 - has always been drawing with a shower head above his head. 2006 complained Zuma because of some cartoons Shapiro on payment of 15 million Rand for libel ; In 2013 the lawsuit was dropped. Zuma withdrew another lawsuit from 2008 in 2012. In 2009 the television series ZANEWS , a satirical television show with puppets depicting well-known South Africans, came up by Shapiro and producer Thierry Cassuto. By February 2015 he had drawn around 5,000 caricatures.
Shapiro has had many international solo exhibitions, including in New York, London and Frankfurt am Main, as well as numerous group shows.
