Construction of the first Polish nuclear power plant Żarnowiec began on the eastern shore of the lake around 1982 , but around 1990 construction work was canceled due to violent protests after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the facilities that had already been ordered in Czechoslovakia were sold to Finland, where they still function today .
