The powiat Wejherowski (kaschub. Wejrowsczi kréz) is a powiat ( district ) in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship . The powiat has an area of 1279.84 km², on which about 210,000 people live.
history
The powiat was created in 1920 with the formation of the Pomeranian Voivodeship as a continuation of the West Prussian district of Neustadt established in 1818 without the municipalities that were transferred to Pomerania (including Prüssau ) and the Free City of Danzig (Sopot). In 1928 the powiat merged into the new powiat Morski (sea district), with Wejherowo (Weyersfrei) remaining the seat of administration. Under German occupation, the powiat morski had to stop all official acts. The Third Reich unilaterally annexed the powiat area without recognition under international law and formed an occupying administrative district of Neustadt. After the end of the occupation, the powiat Morski was able to resume official business. In 1951, the powiat Morski was divided into the powiate Putzig (Pucki) and Wejherowo (Wejherowski), within different boundaries than in 1920, the latter having its official seat again in Wejherowo. In 1975 the powiat, like all powiate, was pro forma a self-governing unit, but integrated into the real socialist regime. In its place came a Rayon Office (urząd rejonowy). Rayon offices were not self-governing bodies, but fulfilled tasks and responsibilities of the government administration. In 1999 the powiat rose again.
