The Zarrenthiner Kiessee is located in the Zarrenthin district of the Bentzin community in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district . The lake was created as a result of the industrial gravel mining carried out since the 1960s . Geologically, the lake lies in a meltwater channel formed during the Brandenburg stage of the Vistula Ice Age .

description

Gravel was already being extracted to a considerable extent at the end of the 19th century, as the construction of a siding for the Demminer Bahnen in 1898 shows. In the first half of the 20th century mostly small-scale mining took place. The production rate was increased in the 1930s when building material for the Tutow airfield was extracted here . Between 1934 and 1939 there was a specially constructed small railway line for this purpose.

Initially, areas formerly affected by gravel mining were redesigned for recreational purposes. So there was B. a small park with a pond and large stones. The place can only be recognized today by the remains of the overgrown benches.

From 1967 onwards, gravel mining took place continuously on an industrial scale. As a result, the direct road connection from Zarrenthin to Jarmen was interrupted around 1980 and the place Zarrenthin was divided by the resulting quarry pond. The dismantling was initially carried out using a floating grab excavator, and since 2006 using a bucket chain excavator . The increased need for building materials for road and motorway construction after German reunification led to the acceleration of gravel and sand mining since the 1990s.

In 1976, a prehistoric barrow with a diameter of 20 meters was registered as a ground monument in the northern part of the mining area . Since it hindered the expansion of the open-cast mine, it was dismantled in 2005 as part of an archaeological investigation and rebuilt in 2006 as a replica at the entrance to the Zarrenthiner bathing establishment on the eastern shore of the lake.

The lake hit the headlines when the asylum seeker Mohammed Belhadj was beaten to death there on April 22, 2001.

Archaeologists use the Zarrenthiner Kiessee to safely store wooden shipwrecks and parts of ships recovered from the Baltic Sea from being attacked by shipworms without extensive conservation . This includes, among other things, the “Darßer Kraweel ”, a coastal boat made of oak that is 13 meters long. In the spring of 2008, considerations were made about the construction of an archaeological open water museum, which can be visited by recreational divers. The Greifswald diving club operates a base on the lake that was already used by the Society for Sport and Technology (GST) during the GDR era .
