Zbigniew Bieńkowski (born August 31, 1913 in Warsaw , † February 23, 1994 there ) was a Polish literary critic , essayist and translator .

Life

Zbigniew Bieńkowski was the son of a Warsaw tailor. He graduated from high school in 1931 and studied law and Romance studies at the University of Warsaw from 1932 to 1939 . He was a guest student in Paris in 1938/39 and then stayed in Italy and Yugoslavia, where he was surprised by the beginning of the Second World War . During the occupation of Poland he was a soldier in the Home Army ( Armia Krajowa ) and fought in the Warsaw Uprising . After the end of the war he was the editorial secretary of the weekly Odrodzenie until 1946 and in 1948/49 the editor of the magazine Polska i Świat in Paris. From 1959 to 1955 he was the editorial secretary of Twórczość and later until 1978 head of the poetry department . He was also temporarily vice director of the Poland Museum in Rapperswil . In 1967/68 and again in 1977 he was a visiting author at the University of Iowa . From 1979 he lived in Słupsk and wrote reviews for the magazines Kultura and Poezja .

He was married three times. He has a son Dawid Bieńkowski with his first wife Małgorzata Hillar , a daughter with Wiera Anisimow, and his third wife was Adriana Szymańska .

His volume of poetry Sprawa wyobrażni ( A Thing of the Imagination ) can be seen as a debut . This appeared in 1945 and was expanded in 1960 and divided into three cycles. Trzy Poematy ( Three Poems ) was published in 1959 and thematically linked to his previous work and, like this, was divided into three parts.

Zbigniew Bieńkowski translated numerous poetry and prose from French into Polish. For this work he was awarded by the Polish PEN . Further translations were Lermontov's The Demon as well as diaries and letters to Milena von Kafka . From 1945 to 1983 he was a member of the Polish writers' association Związek Literatów Polskich and from 1989 the Stowarzyszenie Pisarzy Polskich .
