Zbigniew Jan Wesołowski

Zbigniew Jan Wesołowski SVD (born January 26, 1957 in Kwidzyn ) is a Polish sinologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1976 ( Liceum St. Żeromskiego ) entered the novitiate of the Steyler missionaries in Pieniężno in the same year . In 1977 he began his philosophical and theological studies in the mission seminary there. In 1980, after two years of philosophy and one year of theological studies, he was sent to the OTP (Overseas Training Program) of the Society of the Divine Word in Taiwan . First he learned English in Liverpool and then for two years Mandarin (1981-1983) in Taipei . In 1983 he returned to Poland to finish his studies in theology. In 1986 he gained at the Catholic University of Lublin the master's degree in theology . In the same year he was ordained a priest and began studying Sinology with the minor subjects Comparative Religious Studies and Philosophy at the University of Bonn and work at the Sinological Steyler Institute Monumenta Serica in Sankt Augustin . He received his doctorate in Bonn in 1996 . From 1999 to 2012 he worked at the Catholic Fu-Jen University (1999–2004 as assistant professor and 2004–2012 as associate professor ). There he was director of the branch of the Institute Monumenta Serica - the Sinological Research Center Monumenta Serica in the years 2002–2012. At the end of May 2012 he returned to Sankt Augustin to strengthen the work at the Institut Monumenta Serica; since 2013 he has been editor-in-chief at the same institute (publication of the sinological journal Monumenta Serica and two book series: Monumenta Serica Monograph Series and Collectanea Serica ). Since 2013 he has also been Professor of Comparative Religious Studies and Sinology at the Philosophical-Theological University SVD St. Augustin .

His main research interests are Chinese thought / Chinese philosophy, Chinese religions / Chinese Buddhism , history of Western Sinology, Confucianism and comparative cultures (China and the West).
