Zdeněk Bažant

Zdeněk Bažant (born November 25, 1879 in Prosnitz , Margraviate Moravia , Austria-Hungary , † September 1, 1954 in Nové Město na Moravě ( New Town ), Moravia , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech civil engineer and university lecturer.

Life

Zdeněk Bažant studied from 1896 to 1902 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague . From 1901 he was assistant to Josef Šolín and designed steel bridges, market halls and cable cars for various steel construction companies. In 1904 he was at the Technical University Prague with thesis "Static certain continuous truss" Dr.-Ing doctorate . He then gave lectures on building mechanics , statics and strength theory . In 1906 he completed his habilitation with the thesis "Theory of Influence Lines" at the same university. In 1907 he was promoted to lecturer , in 1909 to associate professor and in 1917 to full professor at the TH Prague, where he held the post of rector twice. He also made great contributions to the development of civil engineering in Czechoslovakia. He made important contributions to the systematization of the theory of influence lines, to the framework theory and to the graphic methods of structural engineering. He achieved international recognition as the editor and author of several textbooks and handbooks as well as through numerous academic articles and lectures, which he also wrote in German and French.

Zdeněk Bažant was a member of several scientific institutions, including the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the Czechoslovak and Polish Academy of Sciences . On behalf of IABSE, he published several works, including an overview article on the historical development of structural analysis of arch dams
