The Zehnthof with the St. Bartholomew Chapel

The Zehnthof is a former yard for the delivery of the so-called tithe in Sommerach, Lower Franconia, in the Kitzingen district . The facility is the largest building in the old town and is located on the main road.

history

As early as the 12th century, the Counts of Castell sold their goods in Sommerach to the Benedictine monastery Münsterschwarzach . In 1295 the monks from the nearby abbey even received the bailiwick of the village and thus rose to become the village lords. With confirmation from the Würzburger Hochstift, the monks of Münsterschwarzach finally became masters of Sommerach in 1306.

The rise also necessitated the construction of a building in which the (natural) tax revenue could be collected. So the Zehnthof was built under the rule of Abbot Johannes V. Krug . It was completed in 1607. After the Thirty Years' War , Krug's successor Plazidus I. Büchs expanded the building until 1682 and in 1675 added the Bartholomäus chapel. The chapel was not completed until the 18th century, in 1751, under Abbot Christophorus Balbus .

With the dissolution of the monastery at the beginning of the 19th century, the Zehnthof came into private hands. In 1939, several families from Berg in der Pfalz came to Sommerach in the course of the evacuations at the beginning of the war and were accommodated in the Zehnthof. During the Second World War , the large wine cellar also served as an air raid shelter. Today the chapel is secluded and the Zehnthof has been converted into a winery. The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation classifies the buildings as architectural monuments .

The Zehnthof presents itself today as a two-wing complex. A single-storey hipped roof building was erected towards the Sommeracher Hauptstrasse . The main building is two-story and ends with a gable roof and a tail gable. The buildings all date from the 17th or 18th centuries, but they go back to older predecessor buildings. The timing is also made clear by the drilled window frames on the main building. The facade is structured by several heraldic stones.

The Zehnthof has a special feature with the former chapel . It was attached to one of the wings of the main building as a round chapel. The main building and the chapel are connected by a windowed connecting passage. The former Bartholomäus chapel has three two-lane windows with post-Gothic tracery . It ends with a slate-covered round helmet.
