The Long and Short of It is a short film and the third directorial work by Sean Astin from 2003 . It was written by actors Astin and Dominic Monaghan and was shot on one day during the pick-up of the DVD version of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers in Wellington , New Zealand's capital . The five-minute long silent film was first released on the DVD version of The Two Towers on August 26, 2003 and was officially submitted to the 2003 Sundance Film Festival .

action

On a street in Wellington, a worker tries to stick a billboard on a wall. But his ladder is broken and his back hurts so he cannot bend down. He is about to give up when a little woman walks past him, takes pity on him and sticks the lower part of the poster on the wall for him. This will attract the attention of a tall man who had previously sat on a nearby bench and glue the upper part with the help of the roller . All three take a step back to look at the poster that advertises a car (the Sedan Wombat 2000) "with more foot space for the unusual man". It becomes clear that the small woman and the large man would not be able to drive the car because of their height, and that the road worker cannot afford it. Instead, they all get on an upcoming bus, and the worker pays for his two new friends. From the bus window you can see that the worker's painting utensils are in the garbage can.

occupation

  • Andrew Lesnie , the cameraman of the Lord of the Rings films, plays the lead role as a grizzled painter (Original: Grizzled Painter ).
  • Praphaphorn “Fon” chansantor plays the little woman. The Thai woman is 1.02 meters tall and was stand-in for Pippin in the Lord of the Rings in scenes with a focus on people or elves.
  • Paul Randall plays the big man; he is 2.16 meters tall and was a double for different people and elves in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies (mainly Gandalf).
  • Peter Jackson , the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit director, plays the bus driver.

Emergence

The idea for the short film was inspired by the gaffer of the Lord of the Rings films, Brian Bansgrove, who died in 2001 . Sean Astin and Dominic Monaghan , the actors of Samweis “Sam” Gamgee and Meriadoc “Merry” Brandybock, developed the concept during the filming of the scene on the bridge of Khazad-Dûm in the film The Lord of the Rings: The Companions . They asked several members of the crew if they would like to join the project and shot the film in a single day during the reunion of all those involved in the 2003 pick-up shoot in the Wellington suburb of Kilbirnie . The high-definition digital video cameras that were also used for the Lord of the Rings were supposed to be packed away, but Astin was allowed to use them for another day.

Sean Astin was the director, screenwriter and producer of the film. He co-wrote the script with Dominic Monaghan, co- producing Jamie Selkirk , editor of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Zane Weiner, production manager. Production director was Her-der-Rings producer Barrie M. Osborne , who also appears as an extra . Peter Jackson acted as executive producer and Elijah Wood , the actor of Frodo Baggins, as first assistant director ( 1st assistant director ). Gollum / Sméagol actor Andy Serkis was assistant location manager . During production, he worked his way up to the position of producer but decided it was boring and returned to his job as a site manager.

The Long and Short of It contains no dialogue; it's a silent movie . Instead, Che gelida manina from the first act of the opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini plays in the background of the entire film ; sung by tenor Roberto Alagna , released in 1999. The music was selected by the actor Peregrin "Pippin" Tuk Billy Boyd , so that all four actors of the Hobbits in the Lord of the Rings film series were involved in the short film. A making-of was published for the production of the film .
