The Zellerfels is a mighty granite rock castle (length 35 m, width 10 m, height 15 m) on the south-western slope of the Großer Waldstein in the Fichtelgebirge ( Northern Bavaria ), 772  m above sea level. NN . The rock area is named after the town of Zell in the Fichtel Mountains .

history

The south side of the imposing rock group, which lies in the middle of the high forest, has been severely damaged by granite extraction, it has been designated as a protected natural monument and is a geotope . The Zellerfels lies on the border of the historical Sechsämterland , today the district boundaries of Wunsiedel and Hof run past it. To the west of it runs the "Zeller Weg" mentioned in the land register of the six offices from 1499, an old road connection from Weißenstadt via Ruppertsgrün to Zell and Münchberg. The rock, visible from afar, was used as a marking point for the border that previously passed there. On the east side is achiseled Latin cross . The inscriptions read "62204" and "515204" with the letters "IH" and "JW40". "JAB" is almost invisible on the west side, underneath there is a coat of arms.

The Zellerfels is recognized by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as an important geotope (geotope number: 479R006) and a natural monument .
