Interstitium (anatomy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As interstitium ( lat. - Anat. ;, Gap ') or stroma ( Greek. -Anat.) Is in the histology which the parenchymatous organs (supportive) and untergliedernde by withdrawing intermediate tissue , respectively. It is mostly a matter of connective and supporting tissue , more rarely epithelial tissue or muscle cells . Occasionally, the term 'interstitium' is also used for the space between cells .

properties

The interstitium of organs that are exposed to higher levels of movement (the submucosa of the digestive tract , the bladder, the skin , the peri- bronchial and peri- arterial connective tissue) are crisscrossed with comparatively thick bundles of collagen fibers , which help them to stretch against mechanical stress , Shear and compression are stabilized. The collagen fibers are covered on one side with fibroblast-like cells, on the other side surrounded by the tissue fluid .

The supply pathways ( blood vessels , nerves ) of the organ run in the interstitium . It subdivides the corresponding organ into lobes (lat. Lobi ), lobes (lat. Lobuli ) or complexes . The cells of the interstitium are not specific for the organ. The intercellular spaces are filled by the extracellular matrix and tissue fluid.

For an examination of the fluid-filled spaces by confocal laser endomicroscopy , the surrounding tissues are frozen with the fluid before fixation , otherwise the fluid will leak, the cell space collapses and the tissues adhere to one another.
