Mihails Zemļinskis (born December 21, 1969 in Riga , Latvian SSR ; Russian Михаил Землинский , Michail Semlinski ) is a former Latvian football player and coach and today's politician.

Soccer

With the exception of two short guest appearances in Hungary at BVSC Dreher (1994) and in Israel at Hapoel Kfar Saba (1997–1998), he always stayed with Skonto Riga .

There he played 252 times from 1991 to 1997 and from 1997 to 2005 and scored 57 goals. Zemļinskis was a reliable and experienced defender , among other things, he is one of the few who have been there since the first international match after Latvia's independence (as was the captain of the national team Vitālijs Astafjevs ).

He took part in the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal . Zemļinskis mostly played as a stopper and therefore wore jersey number 4. He scored 12 times in 105 international matches.

2005 Zemļinskis ended his career and worked in the coaching staff of the Latvian clubs Olimps BK and FC Daugava Daugavpils . From 2009 to 2001 he was the coach of the Latvian U-21 national team .

politics

In 2006 Zemļinskis joined the Social Democratic Party "Harmony" . For this he moved to the Latvian Parliament in 2009 , to which he has belonged ever since.

At the European level, Zemļinskis was a member of the Catholic-conservative Coalition pour la Vie et la Famille in 2017 . In 2018 he is a member of the far-right Alliance for Peace and Freedom .
