Zeno Vendler

Zénó Vendler also Zenuo Wandele (born December 22, 1921 in Devecser ( Hungary ); † January 13, 2004 in Hetyefő , ( Veszprém county )) was a Hungarian - US - American - Canadian " philosopher . He was a founding member and director of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Calgary ( Canada ), his research focused on the type of action , and substantiation .

Life

Vendler was born in Hungary, where he grew up and spoke Hungarian and German fluently. He was the son of Zénó Miklós Vendler and his wife, née Vilma Gubás. During his studies, including theology, philosophy and linguistics in Maastricht in 1948 , he came into contact with the Jesuit order . In 1952 he obtained a licentiate in theology at the Maastricht Theological College ( Canisianum ). Vendler left the Netherlands in 1951 and continued his philosophical studies at Harvard University . In 1959 he was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University with his work Facts and Laws . This was followed by various teaching activities at various North American universities until he was finally appointed as a professor at the University of Calgary. From 1960 to 1964 he was assistant professor at Cornell University in Ithaca , New York, then from 1964 to 1965 again associate professor at Brooklyn College . After he left the University of Calgary in 1973, he first went to Rice University as a professor of philosophy for one year and then to the University of California in San Diego . After his retirement in 1989, he lived in the state of Oregon for a few years. Then he largely moved his center of life to Hungary.

He was married twice - his first wife was Helen Hennessy Vendler, née Hennessy (* 1933) - both have a son, David Vendler. They married on May 21, 1960, the marriage lasted until 1964. Then he married the born Semiramis da Silva on May 28, 1964, they also had a son, Alexander. In 1995 Vendler returned to his former homeland Hungary more often and acquired Hungarian citizenship. Vendler died on January 13, 2004 at the age of 83 of acute kidney failure while visiting family in Hungary.

Work and influence

Vendler's 1957 article Verbs and times in the Philosophical Review, his conceptual differentiations have a great influence on the considerations of the aspect and the type of action .

Zeno Vendler (1957/1967) offers four basic aspect classes, types of action or situation aspects in his inventory of terms for verbal predicates, so he divides into:

  • States : state predicates they denote eventualities that are static, durative and atelic . Examples: “know”, “love”, “be healthy”, own a house. Examples in English : be, resemble, love, live, known, contain .
  • Activities : process predicates they denote eventualities that are dynamic, durative and atelic. Examples: “walking”, “drinking”, “learning”, “riding a bike”. Examples in English: run, carry, watch, snow, seek, eat .
  • Achievements , punctual state changes or predicates of an immediate state change denote eventualities that are dynamic, punctual and telic. Examples: "recognize", "find something", "win the lottery". Examples in English: leave, recognize, win the race, ignite, break, acquire .
  • Accomplishments , gradual changes of state or predicates of an extended state change, they denote eventualities that are dynamic, durative and telic. Examples: "get sick", "healthy". Examples in English: become, cover, walk a mile, bake a cake, destroy, create .
