Zenon Brzewski

Zenon Brzewski (born June 3, 1923 in Ulanów ; † February 9, 1993 in Warsaw ) was a Polish music teacher and violinist.

Brzewski attended the humanistic grammar school in Kraków and began training at the conservatory with Władysław Syrewicz , which was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During the occupation he was active in the armed resistance in the Polish Home Army and fought in the partisan groups Ponurego and Nurta . After the war he attended St. Jacek High School in Kraków and then continued his studies at the Warsaw Conservatory and with Irena Dubiska at the Warsaw Music Academy . From 1961 to 1963 he completed postgraduate studies with Max Rostal in Bern, Wolfgang Schneiderhan in Lucerne and André Gertler in Brussels.

After receiving his diploma in 1956, he taught first as an assistant, then as an associate and finally (1983-1993) as a full professor at his alma mater. He headed the violin class here, later the department for string instruments, and was vice rector of the university from 1972 to 1975. He also taught at the Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin and directed a violin class at the Łódź Music Academy . His students include musicians and music teachers such as Mirosław Ławrynowicz , Robert Szreder , Krzysztof Węgrzyn , Andrzej Grudzień , Michał Trojanowski , Paweł Urstein , Danuta Głowacka , Kazimierz Olechowski and Iwona Koter .

As a juror, Brzewski took part in numerous national and international violin competitions. He was a co-designer of the national Stanisław Serwaczyński Competition and the Lipiński and Wienianwsi Competition for young violinists in Lublin, founder of the International Music Courses in Łańcut and a music school for gifted youngsters in Warsaw.

He took part in numerous congresses of the Association of String Instruments Teachers and was the founder and president of its Polish section, from 1973 to 1981 Vice-President and from 1972 to 1992 Chairman of the Pedagogical Section of the Polish Association of Music Artists and Chairman of the Council for Music Education at the Polish Ministry of Culture.

As an active musician he was a. a. Member of the Warsaw Opera Orchestra and the National Philharmonic and played in a string quartet with Irena Dubiska , Włodzimierz Tomaszewski and Kazimierz Wiłkomirski . In 1958 he founded the Antique Collegium Varsoviense together with Stefan Sutkowski and Juliusz Borzym , with which he performed until 1965.

For his educational and artistic activities, Brzewski received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta , the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland with Swords and the Golden Cross of Merit, the Golden Badge of Honor of the City of Warsaw, two prizes from the Minister for Culture and Art and the Order of Smiles .
