Center for Jewish Cultural History

The Center for Jewish Cultural History of the University of Salzburg (ZJK) is an interdisciplinary institution of the University of Salzburg and was founded in 2004.

Foundation, goals, networking

The ZKJ is committed to the cultural studies method and deals with Jewish history, culture, literature and religion. Major research areas are rabbinical literature , Yiddish literature and politics of remembrance . Jewish identities, the experience of belonging and foreignness, the coexistence of cultures, minorities and majorities as well as migration and cultural exchange are also researched .

The interdisciplinary founding team included Anne Betten , Gerhard Bodendorfer , Maria Dorninger , Armin Eidherr , Helga Embacher , Gerhard Langer , Albert Lichtblau , Karl Müller and Bernhard Scherl . The establishment of the center was made possible by a financial donation from philanthropist Donald Kahn (1925–2013) amounting to 500,000 euros.

The ZJK is a member of the Working Group for Jewish Studies in Austria (AGJÖ), an informal association of university and non-university institutions that has existed since 2008 and is dedicated to the research, publication and teaching of Jewish history and culture. Further members of the AGJÖ are the Institute for Jewish Studies at the University of Vienna , the Institute for Jewish History in Austria (INJOEST) and the Center for Jewish Studies (CJS) at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz . The working group enables the exchange, the joint planning of conferences, projects and publications as well as the discourse on topics and methods. AGJÖ meetings take place every six months and are open to all employees of the member institutions.

Master's degree

The ZJK has been offering a master’s degree in Jewish cultural history since 2010 .
