Institute for Jewish History in Austria

The Institute for the Jewish History of Austria (INJOEST) was founded in 1988 at the instigation of the Viennese historian Klaus Lohrmann as the Institute for the History of Jews in Austria in St. Pölten and is supported by an association of the same name. It serves to research the history and culture of the Jews in Austria since the Middle Ages .

Organization and history

The institute is located in the cantor house of the former synagogue in St. Pölten, which is now a memorial . The former synagogue room is still used for events. Several changing exhibitions are housed in the premises. The permanent exhibitions include: “We lived a really Jewish life”, “God and Emperor” and “... there were such nice people there”. In addition, there is a “Learning Place Former Synagogue St. Pölten”.

In 2008 it was renamed the Institute for Jewish History in Austria . It has been associated with the Institute for Austrian Historical Research since 2011 . In addition to the management and a secretariat, it employs around eight people. The institute is a member of the Working Group for Jewish Studies in Austria (AGJÖ), which was founded in 2011.

Funding takes place u. a. by the Federal Ministry of Science and Research , the State of Lower Austria , Vienna , St. Pölten, the Federal Chancellery , the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research , the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for the Victims of National Socialism , the Future Fund of the Republic of Austria and the Rothschild Foundation Europe .

The historian Günther Hödl , former rector of the University of Klagenfurt , was president of the sponsoring association for a long time.

The historian Martha Keil is currently the institute's deputy director from 1995 to 2004. She replaced the founding director and historian Klaus Lohrmann, who had headed the institute since 1988.

Publications

From 1991 to 2003, on the occasion of the summer schools , the summer academy news published since the Institute is the publisher of the annual journal Jews in Central Europe (formerly Jews in Austria ). Albert Lichtblau and Eleonore Lappin have been publishing the series Traces in Time on behalf of the institute since 2011 . With the book series Eyewitness reports , six volumes are available, most recently published by Böhlau Verlag . In addition, general research is promoted through the support of the institute. a. the standard work History of the Jews in Austria as well as study and conference volumes and regional and city history.
