Günther Hödl (born June 17, 1941 in Stockerau ; † August 11, 2005 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) was an Austrian historian with a focus on the Middle Ages and multiple rector of the University of Klagenfurt .

Live and act

Born in Lower Austria, Günther Hödl studied history, German and theater studies at the University of Vienna . In 1964 he received his doctorate there with a thesis on Leopold I of Austria . In 1974 he completed his habilitation at the University of Salzburg with a study on Albrecht II von Habsburg and the award of the Venia legendi for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences . In 1975 he was appointed associate professor for the history of the Middle Ages and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Salzburg. In 1975 he was appointed full professor for the same subject areas at the University of Education . Already in Salzburg he was in charge of the historical series Österreichische Historische Bibliographie , in which 38 volumes and five CD-ROMs appeared up to his death. In addition, he was involved in several Carinthian state exhibitions as a research assistant and consultant , most recently in 2001 in the exhibition Schauplatz Mittelalter in Friesach .

Hödl was rector of the University of Klagenfurt (until 1993 "University for Educational Sciences") for three non-consecutive terms and thus also involved in university politics. In this function he was a member of the Austrian Rectors' Conference and temporarily also its deputy chairman (1988–1989). In his first tenure as rector from 1979 to 1983, he tried above all to consolidate the established courses of study and to open the university nationally and internationally. In his second period as rector from 1987 to 1989, there were initial plans for an extension to the university as well as a reorganization of the university into faculties, which was implemented in 1993. His third term of office from 2003 to 2005, during which he died, was characterized by the professional expansion of six technical chairs (2004) and further internationalization. In 2004 the university was given the addition of the Alpen-Adria- Universität Klagenfurt to its name . In spring 2005 Hödl was diagnosed with lung cancer. After his death, Vice Rector Martin Hitz took over the official business.

Hödl has been awarded numerous scientific honors and memberships for his research. He was an academic adviser to the Austrian National Library and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . He was awarded the Theodor Körner Prize (1968), the Great Silver Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria (1986), the Andrej Einplayer Prize (1990), the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class (1991) and the Premio Internazionale di Sala di Cultura de Luca (Belluno, Italy, 2001), the Alps-Adriatic Prize of the Alps-Adriatic Working Group for cross-regional cooperation in the fields of science and culture (2004).

Hödl had been married since 1964. The couple had a son and a daughter together and, at the time of Günther Hödl's death, four grandchildren.
