Willibald Dörfler
Willibald Dörfler (born June 20, 1944 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian mathematician . From 1993 to 1999 he was rector of the University of Klagenfurt .
Life
Willibald Dörfler studied after graduation in 1962 in St. Poelten at the University of Vienna , where he in 1967 with a dissertation on continuous uniform distribution doctorate , doctoral supervisor was Edmund Hlawka . A year later he passed the teaching examination for mathematics and physics .
From 1968 he was an assistant at the Technical University of Vienna , where he joined in 1973 in the field of mathematics habilitated . In 1974 he was appointed full professor of mathematics with a special focus on didactics at what was then the University of Education in Klagenfurt , where he stayed until his retirement in 2012. In the academic year 1990/91 he was prorector at what is now the University of Klagenfurt and in the academic years 1991/92 and 1992/93 prorector. In 1993 he was elected rector of the University of Klagenfurt , followed by Winfried Bernward Müller in 1999 .
He was visiting professor at Moscow University (1970), Vanderbilt University in Nashville (1979 and 2001), Kassel University (1983), Rutgers University in New Brunswick (2000) and La Trobe University in Melbourne (2001) .
His areas of work include the didactics and philosophy of mathematics, in particular the cognitive development of concepts, the psychological and epistemological status of mathematical objects as well as semiotic aspects of mathematics. He also headed the doctoral college "Mathematical Education in the Information Technology Age" and was active in the training and further education of mathematics teachers.
In May 2017 he received his golden doctoral degree from the University of Vienna.
Willibald Dörfler is married and has three children.
