The Zeppelinplatz is a place in the Berlin district of Wedding of the district center . On June 1, 1910, it was named "in honor of the famous airship, Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin and in memory of his trip to Berlin on August 29, 1909".

history

The Schmuckplatz was laid out in the second half of the 19th century according to the Hobrecht plan as Platz D, Dept. X / 1 , and is located in the Brussels neighborhood . It is bounded by the streets Limburger Strasse, Ostender Strasse and the access road Zeppelinplatz. At the same time it divides Antwerpener Straße, which runs between Seestraße and Triftstraße. Between Zeppelinplatz and Genter Straße (temporarily: Fritz-Schulz-Straße ) the Erbbauverein Moabit eGmbH had a closed four-story residential development built at the beginning of the 1920s (address: Zeppelinplatz 1-6 and Genter Straße 33-45). The south-west side of the square is directly connected to a school complex with what was then the technical middle school (main address: Lütticher Straße). The apartment block has been a monument complex since the 1980s.

In the 1980s, the plaza was extensively redesigned based on designs by landscape architect Michael Hennemann.

Plan for the renewed Zeppelinplatz, 1988

Hennemann described his planning idea as follows:

“The central idea was to abolish the Antwerpener Strasse between Ostenderstrasse and Limburger Strasse, which had previously been dividing the square, and to merge the square into a spatial unit. This was done by mutual agreement with the civil engineering department (parking space replacement areas were created in Ostender Strasse by 'cross parking'). Characteristic elements of the new Zeppelinplatz are the lawn with old trees, a seating area with an arcade and rose bed, and the enlarged [...] play area with a variety of games. "

The planned costs amounted to 2.83 million DM .

Redesign 2015/2017

In the spring of 2014 , the citizens' initiative Brusselser Kiez , the district council “Mensch müller” and the adjacent Beuth University of Technology commissioned three landscape planning offices with new designs for a partial renovation of the now aging playground and the sunbathing area. After numerous citizens' meetings, corresponding planning changes and a precautionary bomb search, City Councilor Carsten Spallek was able to break the first sod for the renovation on July 8, 2015 .

As part of the federal-state program Active Centers , the Zeppelinplatz has been planned and redesigned by the Teichmann LandschaftsArchitekten office since summer 2015. In the first construction phase, the construction project included the redesign of the playground with a water feature, a fenced sunbathing lawn with a dog ban and the renovation of the central promenade. The second construction phase included the redesign of a youth area, the renewal of the football field, the space in front of the Beuth house and an action field. In cooperation with the Beuth University, the forecourt of the entrance to the historic Beuth House was redesigned, including lighting. The opening ceremony took place on October 6, 2017. The total cost of the construction measure was around 2.2 million euros including the increased costs for the disposal of contaminated sites and the clearance of ordnance.
