Zero no Tsukaima ( Japanese ゼ ロ の 使 い 魔 ) is a light novel series by Noboru Yamaguchi . It was also implemented as an anime and manga .

action

The young magician Louise Francoise is the third daughter of the prestigious La Vallière family. She is a student of the "Tristein" magician academy. Her classmates call her "Zero Louise" (English zero means "zero"). This name is based on the fact that she has not yet managed to successfully cast a spell. Some of your experiments have had spectacular results. A planned transformation of stone into brass ends in an explosion. In later seasons, however, she gains the strength to cast her own very powerful spells with the element of void.

In an exam, the aspiring magician should conjure up a companion ( tsukaima ). Louise offers all of her magic and wants someone who is "loyal, beautiful and powerful" and has a Japanese boy from earth who is anything but loyal. The rules of the exam forbid you to take it again and try again. So now Louise has to get along with her companion, Saito Hiraga.

Because the runes Gandalfr are on his arm, making him a successor to the last Gandalfr who lived 6000 years before, Saito has the strength in the magical world to use every weapon that was made for battle. He can use weapons that are intended for decoration, for example, but without his Gandalfr power.

Characters

Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière ( ル イ ズ ・ フ ラ ン ソ ワ ー ズ ・ ル ・ ブ ラ ン ・ ド ・ ラ ・ ヴ ァ リ エ ー ル , Ruizu Furansowāzu ru Buran do Ra Variēru )

Louise is a sixteen year old, but short for her age at 1.53 m, magician of the magician academy of "Tristein". She is currently in her second year. She is also one of the worst magician in their class because it does not manage to successfully perform even a spell, so they called the "Zero" (English. Zero has received means "zero"), which it inculcates a sense of inferiority. In addition, she has a quick-tempered temperament and is extremely flat-chested, which leads to constant outbursts of jealousy towards better "endowed" women. Her family owns the Duchy of La Vallière in Tristein.
She treats Saito like a dog. He is often beaten with a whip by her and has to sleep on a bed of straw. In the course of the series, however, she changes and even falls in love with Saito. Even so, he continues to be whipped by her.
The reason why Louise cannot use earth, wind, water or fire spells is because she has the fifth element, "void". The fifth element is very strong and was believed to exist only in legends. Because she has the fifth element, she also has a legendary confidante, Gandalfr . Its job is to protect the wizard while he prepares his spells.

Saito Hiraga ( 平 賀 才 人 , Hiraga Saito )

Saito is Louise's seventeen year old partner and is actually from Earth. To be precise: from Tokyo. During the summoning of Louise, a portal appears a few steps in front of Saito. When he takes a closer look, the portal sucks him in and transports him into the world of Louise. At first he couldn't understand the language of Louise and the others. It was only when Louise tried to cast a silence spell on him (which went wrong) that he could understand her and the others.
As a sign that he is "Gandalfr", there are runes on his left hand that mean "Gandalfr". In later episodes the "Gandalfr" is also referred to as the "left hand of God".ᚷᚢᚾᛞᛟᛚᚠ
As "Gandalfr" Saito has the ability to handle any weapon made for combat very well. He receives the "Derflinger" sword from Louise. Derflinger was also used by the last "Gandalfr" 6000 years earlier. In the course of the plot, Derflinger is transformed into a new sword.
Due to his merits, he is of Henrietta only knighted Saito Chevalier de Hiraga ( サイト·シュヴァリエ·ド·ヒラガ , Saito Shevarie do Hiraga appointed) and later receives a fief and the associated titles Additional Des Ornières ( ド·オルニエール , do Oruniēru ).

Siesta ( シ エ ス タ , Shiesuta )

Siesta is - like Saito - an "ordinary" person, so she has no magic. Saito and Siesta meet early at the Tristein Academy and become friends. Siesta initially works as the maid of a rich nobleman who aims to win her as a lover, but later she saves Saito from him, whereupon she falls in love with him. From then on she worked as a maid at the Tristein Academy. At the first meeting she falls in love with Saito and takes care of him when he is punished again by Louise. Her hometown is called Tarbes and it is quite a small village. Siesta later tells that her great-grandfather, like Saito, comes from another world and came into this world with the help of a "dragon", which is now the secret treasure of her village. It turns out that the man was also from Japan. Siesta's black hair and eyes also indicate that she is of Japanese descent. Later she tries to win Saito in a competition with Louise, which leads to many outbursts of anger from Louise. When Saito is made a knight, she becomes his servant.

Church of Augusta Frederica von Anhalt Zerbst

Kirche is a classmate of Louise's and her greatest rival, partly because her families have been enemies for a very long time. She flirts and regularly meets up with various classmates. At some point, Saito briefly arouses her interest, which makes Louise incredibly jealous. Church comes from Germania. She later reports that she did too much mischief at her old school and was therefore sent to the Tristein Academy abroad on the grounds that she would ruin the family's good reputation. She is very spirited. Your confidante (tsukaima) is a red lizard that can spit fire. Church calls them "Flame".

Tabitha ( タ バ サ , Tabasa ) or Charlotte Helene Orléans ( シ ャ ル ロ ッ ト ・ エ レ ー ヌ ・ オ ル レ ア ン , Sharurotto Erēnu Orurean )

Tabitha is a triangular mage of the wind and one of the most powerful sorceresses at the Tristain Mages Academy. Her summoned confidante is a blue wind dragon named Silpheed. However, she does not imagine her power or her status as a nobleman - most of the time you just see her wandering around the campus immersed in a book, although she is not very talkative because she does not seem to be particularly interested in social interaction. Even in combat, she maintains her usual calm. Eerie noises at night upset her because she is afraid of ghosts. Her best friend is the church fire mage, whose personality is exactly the opposite of hers. Her mother has suffered severe psychological damage from a poison attack, and she was often sent on dangerous missions as a child, but all of them she fulfilled, which gave her the title of knight. In the course of the plot, she falls in love with Saito, with the support of the church.

Tiffania , also Tiffania of Tudor

Tiffania does not appear in the anime until the end of the second part, where she revives Saito, who is near death. She is a half-elf and has the typical pointed elf ears. She is also very pretty - and the second Void user. She is the last survivor of the Albionian Tudor family. What stands out about her are her unusually large breasts, which make a huge impression on Saito and make Louise very jealous. In the course of the plot, she falls in love with Saito and tries to win him over as her familiar, a project that succeeds, which gives Saito additional skills - he becomes a lifprasir, a void amplifier that powerfully enhances the void spells of other void users can amplify. However, this drains his own vitality.

Henrietta de Tristain ( ア ン リ エ ッ タ ・ ド ・ ト リ ス テ イ ン , Anrietta do Torisutein )

Henrietta is the Queen of Tristein and an honest and friendly person who always wants the best for her subjects. In difficult situations she appears determined and strong on the outside, but sometimes feels overwhelmed with the tasks of a queen. Louise and Henrietta have been friends since early childhood, with Louise seeing them as her role model, and Henrietta accepts Louise and her friends as the only people she can truly trust, which is why she often asks them to stand by her side. Although it is forbidden due to several conflicts between the kingdoms, she loves Prince Wales of Albion, who is later murdered by the rebels, and she asks with her last breath to fall in love with someone else and forget him. She falls in love with Saito and tries to seduce him partially, which leads to conflicts with Louise, who is torn between her admiration for Henrietta and this breach of trust.

Guiche de Gramon ( ギ ー シ ュ ・ ド ・ グ ラ モ ン , Gīshu do Guramon )

Guiche is a big crush at the Tristain Magic Academy. He attends the same class as Louise and Montmorency, which is actually his great love, but that doesn't stop him from flirting with other girls. He's cocky and boastful, but when things get serious he gets meek. Only when he is seized by his honor does he develop an unexpected bravery, which shows that he comes from a noble family with a long military tradition. He is an earth mage and uses a rose as a wand.

Montmorency Margarita la Fère de Montmorency ( モ ン モ ラ ン シ ー ・ マ ル ガ リ タ ・ ラ ・ フ ェ ー ル ・ ド ・ モ ン モ ラ ン シ , Monmoranshī Marugarita ra Fēru do Monmoranshi )

Montmorency is a sophomore enchanting student at Tristain's Academy of Magic. She is in the same class as Louise and Guiche, with whom she often argues. The fact that he often looks up other girls makes Montmorency mad with jealousy. Still, the two seem to be a good match.

Illococoo ( イ ル ク ク ゥ , Irukuku )

Illococoo first appears after Tabitha was kidnapped. She searches specifically for Saito and finds him too. She doesn't care that she is completely naked when she first meets him. Illococoo has blue hair and is about the same size as Louise. She accompanies Kirche, Louise and Saito on their search for Tabitha. She is the human form of the blue wind kite Silpheed, who is Tabitha's confidante. She can change shape between human and dragon at any time.

Jean Colbert ( ジ ャ ン ・ コ ル ベ ー ル , Jan Korubēru )

Colbert is a teacher at Tristain Academy, a fire mage, and a technical genius. With the support of Saito, he builds the Ostland , Halkegenia's fastest flying ship that is powered by steam. He also supports Saito in the repair of technical devices and weapons from our world, which mysteriously found their way to Halkegenia. There is a dark point in his past: in order to prevent an alleged outbreak of an epidemic, he burned an entire village with all its residents. Only the child Agnes was saved by him.

Agnes

Loyal warrior and herald who leads Queen Henrietta's guard. She is the only survivor of a village that was burned down by Colbert , who mistakenly believed that an epidemic had broken out there. When Agnes learns who was responsible, she hates Colbert. She tolerates him only because of his allegiance to the kingdom.

Joseph de Gallia , also King of Gallia.

The third Void user, but who was the first to discover his gift. In the course of disputes over the throne, he had his brother, the actual heir to the throne, killed. Tabitha's uncle. In the series, he proves to be the protagonists' opponent. He does not appear until the end, but works through his emissary, Sheffield, who is his familiar.

Sheffield is the familiar of Joseph de Gallia, a woman of dubious appearance. She loves Joseph and serves him unconditionally.

Vittorio Sevare , also the Pope of Romalia. The fourth Void user. His familiar (and spy) is Julio Cesaré, who appears for a while as an exchange student at the Tristain Academy.
