The Ulm armory is a former armory on the eastern edge of the city center of Ulm .

history

The origins of the building, which was first mentioned in 1433, can be traced back to the 14th century. The house bears witness to the economic boom that the free imperial city of Ulm achieved in the Middle Ages due to its favorable location. Through multiple extensions (around 1522, 1596 and 1616) and especially through the construction of the new Löwenbau in 1667, an extensive building complex was created.

At the end of the 18th century, the value of what was stored there was estimated at two million guilders . However, all of this was taken possession of by the Austrians in the run-up to the coalition wars in 1797 , "so that it does not fall into the hands of the advancing French". These objects were never seen again in Ulm after the Battle of Elchingen (1805). With the end of the imperial city period, the armory was converted into a barracks in 1808 and used as such until 1919. During the Second World War, the renaissance building, the old armory, fell victim to the heavy destruction. The parts of the building that had been spared from war damage were restored in 1977.

use

The armory served the city as an arsenal for guns, bullets made of stone and iron, grenades, bombs and various rifles, as well as sulfur and saltpeter . In addition, models of fortresses, bridges, mills, buildings, machines, water pipes and the like were kept there. In addition, the armory also had a variety of other uses. The imperial city mint was temporarily located here . Citizens' meetings were held on the square in front of the armory on important occasions. From the 16th to the 18th century, the mustering of the 14th citizen company took place there.

building

The New Armory, which dates back to the baroque era, today shows the typical plastered cuboid drawing with the faceted stone surrounds on the windows. The portals decorated with Baroque and Renaissance motifs are particularly striking . Changing exhibitions and events take place in the pillared hall of the early baroque "lion building". The armory is looked after by the State Palaces and Gardens of Baden-Württemberg .
