The Zeybek is a Turkish folk dance that is mostly danced in the Aegean region and the western Mediterranean region . The dance in 9/8 time is danced in the provinces of Afyon , Aydın , Antalya , Balıkesir , Burdur , Çanakkale , Denizli , Isparta , Izmir , Kütahya , Manisa , Muğla and Uşak . The name is derived from the Zeybeken , a warrior tribe from the mountains of the Aegean region.

This rhythm was also very popular in Turkey until the 1940s . Even Ataturk danced to Zeybek on February 2, 1938, a few months before his death, including Sarı Zeybek . The Zeybek has prescribed steps. These are individual or group dances, with the individual dancers performing slow movements independently of one another in a circle. Today in Turkey there are only folkloric pieces with a Zeybek rhythm. The Zeybek continues to be popular at circumcision festivals, events and weddings.

There are numerous species of Zeybek that have similarities and probably have a common origin. The most famous among them are Aydın Zeybeği , Tavas Zeybeği , Muğla Zeybeği , Harmandalı , Kerimoğlu Zeybeği , Ibrahim Usta and Avşar Zeybeği .
