Zhang Lianwei (born May 2, 1965 in Zhuhai , Guangdong ) is a Chinese professional golfer and the first in his country to win a tournament on the European Tour .

After opening the first golf course in the People's Republic of China in 1984, Zhang began playing golf . He worked as a caddy and won the Chinese amateur championships three times before starting his career as a professional golfer in 1994. He won several tournaments in China and on the Asian Tour and in 2003 the Caltex Singapore Masters , an event that is also part of the European Tour. Zhang succeeded in intercepting world class golfer Ernie Els on the last hole . This success helped him, as the first Chinese, to make it into the top 100 of the golf world rankings, and he was also the first in his country to be invited to the famous 2004 Masters .

Zhang represented China three times in the Dunhill Cup and six times in the World Cup . He was twice on the victorious Asian team in the Dynasty Cup and played once in the Asian selection at the Royal Trophy .
