Zhang was unable to complete her school due to the unrest of the Cultural Revolution as she was sent to work in the country with millions of other youths. It was not until 1979 that she was able to study dramaturgy and directing at the Central Theater Institute in Beijing . Her first novels, which also dealt with the relationship between the sexes in Chinese society, were published in China in the late 1970s.
Zhang's novels On The Same Horizon (1981) and Dream Of Our Generation (1982) were great hits both in China and internationally. In 1986 her volume Pekingmenschen was published in Germany with interviews with people in Beijing , which she put together with the journalist Sang Ye , who was born in Beijing in 1955 . Today she works as a dramaturge and director at the Folk Art Theater in Beijing and continues to write about conditions in Chinese society.
