The Ziegenbrink is a mountain in the Lower Saxony city of Osnabrück .

location

The Ziegenbrink with a height of 112 m belongs to the Berningshöhe, which reaches the highest point on the Bröcker Berg (123 m). To the east on the other side of federal highway 68 is the Schölerberg (126.6 m), to the west of the Kalkhügel (93.7 m). To the north, the mountain drops into the flat area of the Osnabrück city center , which is 65 m high at the town hall.

In winter, when there is snow, it is possible to toboggan on the Ziegenbrink on a 250 m long toboggan run.

history

Due to the poor soil quality on the Berningshöhe, the Ziegenbrink was previously designated as a pasture for sheep and goats, which is where the name of the mountain comes from. Due to the marl, clay and limestone, the vegetation was sparse here, which is where the name of the poor wood in the south comes from.

During the Second World War, a flak barracks was built below the Ziegenbrink. At the same time, several air raid tunnels were built around the Ziegenbrink.

After the war and the establishment of the Bundeswehr, the area of the flak barracks was used by the Bundeswehr as General Martini barracks . Telecommunication Regiment 11 and Telecommunication Regiment 71 of the Air Force were stationed here .

At times there was a wagon castle at Ziegenbrink . This was later relocated to Fürstenauer Weg.

There was a wide media coverage at Ziegenbrink in February 2017 when a tombstone was supposedly disposed of in a wild way. Local residents worried about the safety of the children sledding there, so the tombstone was reported to the city. Research by the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung revealed that a local hip-hop musician had shot a music video there and was not yet able to pick up the stone. A short time later the artist picked up the tombstone.

Osnabrück-Ziegenbrink transmitter

In 1948, the NWDR built a transmitter mast at Ziegenbrink to broadcast radio in the region around Osnabrück. The 108 m high mast was in operation until 1974 and was folded down in 1978.

Weather station

The German Weather Service set up a weather station on the Ziegenbrink in February 1952. This measuring station was previously in Bramsche. Up to the point of automation in 2001, three employees recorded the weather data here. In 2011, the location had to be abandoned due to the increasingly unfavorable measuring environment conditions for weather observations. The tree growth that had formed on the mountain over the years interfered with the wind measurement, so that the results were falsified.

A new location for DWD measurements has been found in Belm. At the Ziegenbrink, however, the temperature is still recorded by the air measuring station. On July 25, 2019, 39.6 ° C were measured there, which is a new record for Ziegenbrink.

From the summer of 2011, Meteomedia and the Osnabrück municipal utilities set up a new fully automatic weather station in Haste .

Extreme
values
Extreme values of the closed weather station at Ziegenbrink:

  • Highest measured temperature on August 12, 2003: 37.2 ° C
  • Lowest measured temperature on January 16, 1956: −21.4 ° C

Air measuring station Bomblatstrasse

A measuring point of the Lower Saxony Air Hygiene Monitoring System (LÜN) has been located below the Ziegenbrink summit since 1988. The measuring point is operated by the state trade inspectorate in Hildesheim and measures and registers the pollutant content of the air. The measured values determined here form the background air pollution in the city of Osnabrück. Another measuring point is located on the castle wall in the city center, where the city-related air pollution is measured.

Community center Ziegenbrink

In 1979 the city bought the former NDR building and converted it into a community center. The converted building opened in February 1982.
