The petite vegetable bug ( Eurydema dominulus ), also red and black vegetable bug , syn. Eurydema dominula , is a European stink bug species .
features
The petite vegetable bug, drawn in red and black, reaches body lengths between 5.5 and 7.5 mm. The pronotum has six black spots that can flow into one another; the scutellum only has a large black spot. The half-ceilings (hemielytres) each show a large, hook-shaped spot next to another smaller one just before the black membrane . The lateral edge of the abdomen (connexive) has a few small black dots.
Similar species
Similar species are the black-backed vegetable bug ( Eurydema ornata ) or the cabbage bug ( Eurydema oleracea ).
distribution
The bug occurs all over Central Europe. It lives on wet meadows and on the edges of forests. Furthermore, the species Eurydema pulchra, which occurs in South and East Asia and New Guinea, has recently been considered a synonym for Eurydema dominulus .
Way of life
Mating takes place in spring from late April to late May. The eggs are laid from June in two-row clusters of six eggs each on the leaves and stems of the host plants. The larvae develop from June to July. The adult animals ( Imagines ) hibernate.
The petite vegetable bug feeds mainly on cruciferous vegetables (Brassicaceae) such as foam herb and watercress as well as umbelliferous seeds (Apiaceae).
