The eurydema ornata or jewelry Bug ( Eurydema ornata , Syn. : Eurydema ornatum ) is a bug from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).
features
The bugs grow to be 7.0 to 9.0 millimeters long. They are colored conspicuously red and black. The pronotum has six black spots that can flow into one another; the scutellum only has a large black spot. The hemi -ceilings (hemielytres) each show a large, hook-shaped spot next to another smaller one just before the black wing tip called the membrane . One can distinguish the red-black colored morph from the very similar dainty vegetable bug ( Eurydema dominulus ) by the dark spots along the edge of the corium of the hemielytras , which the black-backed vegetable bug lacks. Different color morphs are often formed; there is one with a whitish-yellow basic color.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed from North Africa over the entire Mediterranean area to the south of Scandinavia and east to the south of Siberia, Central Asia, Mongolia and China as well as the Oriental to Pakistan and India. The species has recently also been recorded from the British Isles, where it occurs on the Channel Islands and the coastal areas of Dorset , Hampshire and Sussex . It is believed to be common in other parts of southern England as well. The species is widespread in Germany, but is rarer in the north than in the south. In the lowlands of the northwest it is only sporadically distributed. In Austria the species occurs frequently everywhere. The habitats are similar to those of the cabbage bug ( Eurydema oleracea ), but the black-backed vegetable bug needs more warmth and therefore usually inhabits drier and warmer areas.
Way of life
In Central Europe there is only one generation per year, but in favorable years one can observe further matings and oviposition even in midsummer or autumn, whereby the development of this generation can probably not be complete. The wintering takes place as an imago . The bugs feed on cruciferous vegetables (Brassicaceae) such as cresses ( Lepidium ), radishes ( Raphanus ) or cabbage ( Brassica ).
