The petite Widertonmoos ( Polytrichum longisetum , Syn . : Polytrichastrum longisetum ) occurs only in moderately to strongly acidic, dry to wet bogs between sphagnum peat, or rarely on rotten wood or on earth. It is a low-competitive pioneer moss, which particularly populates peat extraction areas and open raised bog areas . Typical accompanying mosses are the Steifblättrige women's hair ( Polytrichum strictum ), the Golden women hair moss ( Polytrichum commune ) and the Deceptive peat moss ( sphagnum fallax ).
It can be confused with the beautiful Widertonmoos ( Polytrichastrum formosum ), which (besides other location requirements) has smaller lamina cells, has a narrower leaf edge and forms cylindrical-rectangular capsules. The leaf margins of the dainty wild clay moss are also provided with characteristic teeth. (see picture)
