Room 108 (Original title: Beau Sejour ) is a Belgian Fantasy - Thriller - television series , from the previously published one season with 10 episodes. The first broadcast in Dutch took place on January 1, 2017 on the Belgian channel Eén . The first German-language broadcast followed on March 2, 2017 on arte . Since March 16, 2017, the series has also been available on Netflix .

action

The central character of the plot is Kato Hoeven from a village in the Limburg province near the Meuse , who discovers her own body in room 108 of the Hotel Beau Séjour . The young woman must realize that she was the victim of murder and has now awakened as a ghost from the dead. She cannot remember either her murderer or the circumstances of her death and begins to investigate on her own.

This turns out to be complicated, since Kato is imperceptible to most of the living. Only a handful of people form a seemingly arbitrary exception: As it turns out later, these are those people who unknowingly facilitated the murder of Katos on the night of her death and who feel guilty about it. In the course of the plot, Kato discovers many secrets that are hidden behind the staid facades of her homeland. In the end, Kato's mentally disturbed stepfather, Marcus Otten, turns out to be the perpetrator who has more murders on his conscience.

criticism

Room 108 received favorable reviews. Heike Hupertz found in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that “watching is not only worthwhile for fans of series like ' Weinberg ' or ' Broadchurch '”. Room 108 is a "realistic, milieu strong series with a supernatural touch". Tagesspiegel editor Jan Freitag describes the series as "fabulous" and "absolutely worth seeing", but criticizes "some [...] lengths" and calls the investigators "rather pale [...]".

The Frankfurter Rundschau also gave a positive verdict: “Even though the series […] is partially part of the fantastic genre, authentic, credible figures appear here. The actors deliver more than routine performances, they go into their roles. ”And further:“ Anyone who is willing to accept the idea that has already been tried and tested elsewhere that a person between this world and the hereafter is looking for his killer and gets involved in the series , encounters a high-class television narration. Tension does not arise here through whipped up action, it lies in the joy of discovering what drives the individual protagonists, which secrets they hide, which decisions they will make. The conventions of the crime genre are by no means neglected, but are enriched dramatically. ”On the other hand, she sees a weak point in the way“ the perpetrator obtains an alibi ”.
